Cat

Prose poem and art
by Mo Conlan

... I would be a cat. I would lie in the sun by day, stalk the moon by night, haunt the dreams of writers wishing to capture the wisdom of my green-eyed gaze. My knowing is so deep that writers would give all they owned to possess it. I talk to the moon. I listen to stories the trees and birds tell. This is why my ancestors were adored -- and for their hunting skills... When I am no longer cat, go back to being a human woman who is a writer, I will remember the stories and the wisdom. I will tell stories to make all who hear know how we are related -- sun and moon, man and woman, cat and dog, lake and sky. And I will, by some magic, remember how to purr.
